Privacy Policy — BetterMiles

BetterMiles ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal and health-related information. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, how long we retain it, and how you can request its deletion. By using BetterMiles, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

When you use BetterMiles, we collect the following information:

Personal Information (during registration):

First Name
Last Name
Email Address

Health and Activity Data:

Walking, running, and cycling distance accessed, with your permission, from Apple Health on iOS or Health Connect on Android.
On Android, exercise-session type and time from Health Connect, with your optional permission, to identify cycling within your recorded distance.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected data to:

Allow you to participate in walking, running, and cycling challenges created by organizers.
Track and display your activity progress.
Calculate challenge results, rankings, and charity impact using the event's activity rates.
Provide personalized insights about your activity performance.
Send important notifications related to your challenges or account.

We do not sell your personal or health data to third parties.

3. Data Retention

Personal Information (Name, Email, Photo): Retained while your account is active and deleted when you delete your account.
Health and Activity Data: Retained while your account is active. After account deletion, activity records are kept with no name, email address or sign-in linked to them, so event results stay accurate.

If you uninstall the app without deleting your account, we may continue to retain your data securely on our servers until deletion is requested.

4. Data Deletion

You have the right to request deletion of your data at any time. You can:

Delete your account from the app's settings (step-by-step instructions and details about what is kept).
Contact us at support@bettermiles.org to delete your account or to ask about your data.

Deleting your account immediately deletes your sign-in account, name, email address, photos and Community posts. Your activity records, comments and likes are kept with nothing linking them to you, so event totals stay accurate. Copies in backups and system logs are deleted automatically within 7 days. Requests by email are completed within 30 days. See Delete your account for the full process.

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not share your personal or health data with third parties except:

When required by law or legal process.
With event organizers for the sole purpose of managing challenges you voluntarily join.
With service providers that run the app for us, only to provide the service: Supabase (database, sign-in and file storage), Google (crash reports and the Miles assistant) and our email delivery provider.

6. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. However, no system is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

BetterMiles is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with the updated effective date.
